England - World Cup Preview

History in the World Cup

The Three Lions have faced a long string of disappointments at recent major tournaments . This has unfortunately been a recurring trend right from the days of the Golden Generation , with the most recent failure being an uninspiring group stage exit in 2014 under Woy Hodgson .

Current Form

England have won 6 , drawn 3 and lost 1 of their last 10 games , scoring only 14 goals and conceding 5. They had an impressive unbeaten qualification campaign which is usually the case, winning 8 and drawing 2 of their 10 matches. Their opponents in 4 of the last 5 games are Germany , Brazil , Netherlands and Italy . To their credit , they've emerged unbeaten from those games , beating the Dutch and drawing the other 3. There is no doubt that this young squad has progressed under Gareth Southgate but it remains to be seen if they can perform when it really matters.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Harry Maguire (Leicester City), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).

Key Player:

Harry Kane

Harry Kane: England's captain and only truly world-class player, Kane is undoubtedly the main man for the Lions this year. With 41 goals for Spurs this season , he has continued to improve at an unbelievably rapid rate. He can score with both feet , his head and is equally comfortable bringing his team mates into play. This will be crucial as he has quality players in the form of Sterling , Lingard , Alli and Rashford around him. His form and goalscoring ability holds the key to England progressing deep into the tournament this year in Russia.
